Goyal recalled Modi and Trump instructed ministers to prepare groundwork for first tranche by November 2025
New Delhi
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday confirmed that the first tranche of the India-US trade deal is expected to be finalised by November. He said discussions between the two countries have been progressing positively, with both sides satisfied with the pace and outcomes so far.
Speaking in poll-bound Bihar, Goyal recalled that in February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump had instructed their ministers to prepare the groundwork and ensure the first tranche of the agreement was completed by November 2025. He noted that since March, talks have been conducted in a constructive and cordial environment.
The minister’s remarks came a day after Modi and Trump exchanged warm words on social media. Trump, writing on Truth Social, expressed confidence that the two nations would successfully resolve trade barriers. He also said he looked forward to speaking soon with his “very good friend” Prime Minister Modi.
Responding on X, Modi described the US as a close friend and natural partner, adding that the trade talks would unlock the limitless potential of the India-US relationship. He assured that both teams were working diligently to finalise the discussions quickly. Trump later reshared Modi’s post, highlighting the positive spirit of the partnership.
The trade talks are being closely watched, as they are expected to address barriers and open new opportunities in goods and services. With both governments emphasising progress and goodwill, the first tranche of the pact could mark a significant milestone in deepening India-US economic ties.
