Students Protest Demanding Resolution of Academic Confusion

Even a month after degree colleges across the state reopened, classes in government colleges have not started due to the absence of guest lecturers, leaving thousands of students without proper teaching. To demand urgent intervention, students under the AIDSO banner protested on Tuesday at Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle.

AIDSO District Convener Mahantesh Bilur stated that nearly all government degree colleges rely on guest lecturers, and with classes yet to begin, students are worried about their future. This uncertainty threatens their academic progress.

He highlighted that while private colleges have begun classes and tests, government college students—mainly from rural and underprivileged backgrounds—are being denied education. Many travel 20–30 km daily only to return home without attending classes, which he called a betrayal of poor students by the government.

The protesting students marched from Chennamma Circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum to be sent to the Higher Education Minister.

Bilur explained that new UGC guidelines and ongoing court cases have delayed guest lecturer appointments. Student leaders Vijayalakshmi Tatpati, Sanchita Kadolkar, Pallavi Kamble, Sudharani Durugi, and many others participated.

He urged that, according to the Supreme Court’s directive, states need not follow every central guideline in academic matters and must independently ensure students’ welfare and uninterrupted education.
