Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Saturday described Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani’s remarks supporting dialogue with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a “good initiative.” He, however, sought clarity on certain statements by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding the Kashi and Mathura temple issues.
The former Rajasthan Chief Minister said, “If Mehmood Madani has said this, what is wrong? This is a very good initiative. But why raise unnecessary issues? Sometimes Mohan Bhagwat makes statements that bring hope, and at other times he adds confusion.” Gehlot referred to Bhagwat’s comment that while the RSS would not officially back movements for the Kashi and Mathura temples, its workers were free to participate.
Gehlot warned such remarks could spark unrest similar to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. “That agitation put the whole country in turmoil. Why ignite a new fire in the nation again?” he asked, adding that Bhagwat must explain his position clearly.
On Friday, Madani said his organisation had passed a resolution encouraging dialogue between the Muslim community and the RSS. He stressed that while differences exist, efforts should focus on reducing them. Madani praised Bhagwat’s recent outreach on sensitive religious issues, including his comments on the Gyanvapi and Mathura-Kashi disputes, and said such efforts deserved appreciation.
Bhagwat earlier stated that the Sangh officially supported only the Ram Temple movement, while allowing individuals to join other campaigns voluntarily. He also spoke on demographic balance, conversions, and illegal migration, urging opportunities for citizens while recognising Islam’s place in India.
