We Count on India’s Contribution to Ending War: Zelenskyy
KYIV
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his Independence Day greetings and emphasized Ukraine’s reliance on India’s contribution to ending the ongoing war with Russia. In a social media post, Zelenskyy praised India’s dedication to peace and dialogue, noting that every decision strengthening diplomacy benefits security not only in Europe but also in the Indo-Pacific region.
Zelenskyy highlighted the global effort to achieve a “dignified and lasting peace” and called upon India to play a constructive role in this process. The Ukrainian president also referred to his previous greetings to India on August 15, during which he expressed hope that New Delhi would support initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict.
Prime Minister Modi, in response, thanked Zelenskyy for his thoughtful message and reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace and diplomacy. Modi recalled his visit to Kyiv last year and expressed eagerness to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, emphasizing India’s longstanding stance in support of dialogue-driven solutions for global conflicts.
Zelenskyy shared a letter from Modi, dated August 24, appreciating Ukraine’s Independence Day greetings and reaffirming India’s dedication to promoting peace, progress, and mutual cooperation. The Ukrainian leader’s remarks coincide with mounting international attention on India’s strategic positioning amid the looming August 27 deadline for the US-imposed 50% tariffs on Indian crude oil imports from Russia, highlighting the intersection of diplomacy, trade, and security in global geopolitics.
The exchange underscores the importance of India’s diplomatic engagement in supporting conflict resolution and fostering stability in Europe and beyond.
