Russia becomes India’s top oil supplier amid Western sanctions

Russia has described US pressure on India over its import of Russian crude oil as unjustified. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin said Moscow is confident that its energy partnership with India will continue despite external challenges. He added that the situation is difficult for New Delhi, but Russia trusts the strength of its ties with India.

Commenting on Western sanctions imposed on Moscow, Babushkin said the measures were proving counterproductive and harming those who introduced them. He also noted that the role of BRICS as a stabilising force in global affairs is likely to grow during these turbulent times.

His remarks come amid strains in India-US relations after President Donald Trump recently doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, adding an extra 25 per cent penalty linked to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian crude.

India, however, has consistently defended its oil trade with Russia, arguing that energy procurement is guided by national interest and global market conditions. Officials have also highlighted that affordable crude from Russia plays a key role in meeting India’s growing energy needs.

Following the Ukraine conflict in February 2022 and the subsequent Western boycott of Russian oil, India significantly increased its imports of discounted Russian crude. From a small 1.7 percent share of India’s total oil imports in 2019-20, Russia’s contribution rose sharply to 35.1 percent in 2024-25, making it the largest oil supplier to India.

Despite international criticism, New Delhi has stressed that its energy choices are based on securing supplies at the best terms for its citizens, not on external pressure.
