Rain Disrupts Daily Life, Flood-Prone Villages Identified

Authorities are taking proactive steps to minimize public hardship by improving drainage systems and ensuring preparedness.

Continuous rainfall over the past week has severely disrupted normal life in Dharwad district. Between August 1 and 18, the district recorded 122.4mm of rain, nearly 50% higher than the normal 81.5mm. From June 1 to August 18, total rainfall reached 387.7mm, exceeding the usual 356.6mm by 9%. August rains have caused significant damage, with Navalgund and Annigeri taluks worst affected.

Officials reported damages to 290 classrooms across 70 schools, 49 anganwadi centres, 340km of rural roads, 106.6km of municipal roads, 18.68km of district roads, 6.7km of state highways, 95 bridges and culverts under Panchayat Raj and PWD, 42.9km of drains managed by HDMC and local bodies, 12 tanks, 1,241 electricity poles, and 80 transformers.

Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu said “56 villages in 35-gram panchayats under Bennihalla and Tupparihalla command areas are flood-prone, placing around 1,800 families at risk. About 34,000 hectares of agricultural land are in flood zones. Precautionary steps include daily briefings for residents, 71 relief centres, appointed nodal officers, and disaster management committees in all vulnerable villages.”

Emergency services rescued 100 sheep and three shepherds trapped in a stream near Byahatti, Hubballi taluk, and brought four people along with a dog to safety from Bennihalla near Yamanur village, the DC added.
