143 million Units of Renewable Energy Generated in K’taka

Bengaluru

Karnataka set a new milestone in renewable energy on August 18, generating a record 143 million units of electricity from green sources. The share of renewable energy in the state now ranges between 75% and 85%, significantly reducing dependence on conventional sources like thermal and hydro power.

On the day of the record, around 80% of the state’s electricity supply came from renewable sources, reflecting the government’s strong focus on green energy. Wind power has been a major contributor, with daily generation averaging 54 million units, reaching 65.8 million units recently. Solar and other renewable sources have also scaled up production, enabling the state to meet most of its power demand sustainably.

The increase in renewable energy generation has coincided with a fall in electricity consumption due to heavy rains, which lowered usage to 179.03 million units compared to 200.35 million units in the same period last year. Reduced demand, combined with higher green energy output, has cut reliance on central generation stations and lowered government expenditure on power procurement.

K.J. George, Karnataka’s Energy Minister, said, “Generating electricity from renewable sources reduces the government’s financial burden and eases the load on hydro and thermal plants, enabling better management during peak summer demand.” Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta added, “Through solar parks and wind power projects, Karnataka is steadily increasing its renewable energy capacity, driven by ambitious strategies and initiatives.”

The state’s achievements serve as a model for other regions to accelerate their transition to sustainable energy sources.
