Election Commission to hold press conference today

ECI will hold a press conference in New Delhi today, its first since the Bihar voter roll revision

New Delhi

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday, August 17.

According to the poll body, the briefing will be held at 3:00 PM at the National Media Centre, Raisina Road. Entry will be limited to journalists and camerapersons accredited with the Press Information Bureau (PIB). This will mark the first media interaction by the ECI after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

The announcement comes at a politically charged moment, with Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi preparing for his ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ ahead of the Bihar assembly elections. Gandhi has consistently alleged large-scale voter fraud during the SIR exercise and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. On August 1, he claimed that the Commission was directly enabling “vote theft” to benefit the BJP, stating that the Congress has “open-and-shut proof” of irregularities.

In a follow-up press meet on August 7, Gandhi presented data on alleged electoral fraud in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura Assembly constituency, citing the theft of over one lakh votes. He accused the Commission of colluding with the BJP, arguing that such manipulation aided Prime Minister Narendra Modi in securing a third term.

Reiterating his stance, Gandhi recently warned that those responsible for the alleged scam would face punishment in due time. Against this backdrop, the ECI’s upcoming press conference is expected to draw significant attention.
