India-US to pursue mutually beneficial trade deal

New Delhi

India and the United States have agreed to continue talks aimed at finalising a mutually beneficial trade agreement, the government announced on Friday. The discussions follow a visit by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to the US from September 22-24.

During his visit, Goyal met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor, along with key US business leaders and investors to promote trade and investment ties. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated that the meetings were constructive, with both sides exchanging views on the possible framework of the deal and agreeing to continue engagements to achieve an early conclusion.

The delegation’s interactions with US businesses received a positive response, with companies expressing confidence in India’s growth story and a desire to expand their operations in the country. Goyal also participated in a high-level energy security session in New York, highlighting opportunities to expand India-US energy trade, including nuclear power and renewable energy projects. He emphasised India’s achievements in solar energy, the International Solar Alliance, and the “One Sun, One World, One Grid” initiative, showcasing the country’s commitment to affordable, sustainable, and inclusive growth.

Earlier, Goyal held talks with Greer to address key sticking points in the trade agreement, with both sides optimistic about reaching an interim understanding soon. The visit reinforced India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and energy cooperation, while continuing to attract US investment across sectors.
