Even after exactly two weeks have passed since the disaster of KR Circle underpass, the BBMP has not completed the safety inspection of the city’s underpasses. On the other hand, BBMP has not taken up even the least repair work in the problematic underpasses. Last May 21 due to torrential rain in the city. The underpass of the KR circle was heavily waterlogged. At this time, a young woman named Bhanurekha, who was traveling in the car, drowned in the water and died. After this, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had instructed the BBMP officials to check the safety of all the underpasses in the city. Exactly 14 days have passed since this tragedy happened. Monsoon will start differently. However, there are allegations that the BBMP officials have continued their negligent attitude without completing the inspection work regarding the safety of the underpasses. There are a total of 53 underpasses in the city, including 18 railway underpasses and 35 BBMP underpasses. Out of these underpasses, 41 underpasses have been inspected, including the KR Circle underpass where the tragedy occurred. Report of 33 underpasses has been submitted. The report of 8 more underpasses is to be prepared. Officials have informed that the verification work of 12 underpasses has to be carried out. Also, there is waterlogging in KR Circle, Lee Meridian and Kaveri Junction underpass even with light rain. These underpasses are not suitable for use in rainy season. Although it was found out during the inspection that there is a lot of problem with the water falling in the underpass, except for the KR Circle underpass, the BBMP officials have neglected to make at least a temporary arrangement for the smooth flow of rainwater in Kaveri Junction and Lee Meridian underpass.
