Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police (in-charge) CB Ryshyanth said that the police should not suggest a compromise when Dalits visit police stations to file complaints related to atrocities against them.
A direction will be sent to all police stations asking them not to suggest compromise in Dalit atrocity instances, Ryshyanth said at a grievance meeting held for SC, ST communities.
Activist Shekhar informed the SP that the police at many stations have been suggesting a compromise, instead of registering FIRs in case of atrocities against Dalits. They discourage Dalits from filing complaints, saying the opposite party may also file counter-complaints. This affects the proper investigation in Dalit atrocity cases, he said.

Ryshyanth said that the police should not tell victims of atrocities not to file complaints at any cost. Insisting aggrieved parties not to file complaints and initiating compromise is not right on part of the police, he added.
To a query, the SP said the SC,ST grievance meetings should be held at the police station level on third Sundays. He also directed officials to inform community members in advance, if the meetings are held on other days. Participants at the grievance meet demanded that the directorate of civil rights enforcement should function effectively in cases related to Dalits. The SP made an appeal, that the public should not share or forward provocative messages on social media.
Messages and discussions on social media platforms are leading to untoward incidents. Most of the recent cases related to untoward incidents were triggered because of social media messages. The Police department has been keeping a tab on all social media platforms. Meanwhile, the public should also desist from sharing provocative content, he added.
