Champion Defender Retires
Munich
Former Germany and Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has officially retired, closing a decorated career that spanned nearly two decades. The 37-year-old, part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad, made 76 appearances for his country between 2009 and 2018.
Boateng’s most successful spell came at Bayern Munich, where he spent ten years after signing from Manchester City in 2011. During his time in Bavaria, he won nine Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s finest defenders.
“I played for a long time, for big clubs, for my country. I learned, won, lost, and grew through it all,” Boateng said in a heartfelt Instagram video. “Football has given me a lot, but now it’s time to move on. I’m grateful for everything, especially my family and children, who always stood by me.”
Beyond Bayern, Boateng also represented Hamburg SV, Olympique Lyonnais, Salernitana, and most recently LASK Linz in Austria, where his contract ended last month by mutual consent. Known for his strength, composure, and tactical awareness, he was admired for stepping up in decisive matches, particularly in Bayern’s treble-winning seasons.
However, his career was not without controversy. In 2024, he received a suspended fine and warning in a case involving domestic violence allegations from his former partner.
Despite challenges, Boateng’s footballing legacy remains significant. From lifting the World Cup in Brazil to dominating Bundesliga defenses, he leaves behind memories of consistency and resilience.
