Three grievances appellate committees have been appointed by the Center to handle customer complaints against social media and other internet-based platforms. For a period of three years beginning on the date of assumption of office, each of the three GACs (grievances appellate committees) will have a chairperson, two full-time members from various government agencies, and retired senior executives from the industry.
The chief executive of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs will preside over the first panel. Ashutosh Shukla, a retired member of the Indian Police Service (IPS), and Sunil Soni, a former chief general manager, and chief information officer of the Punjab National Bank (PNB), have been chosen as full-time members of the panel.
The GACs were created with the intention of resolving any concerns users may have about how social media networks first handled their content-related and other grievances. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, had stated that following regulations and laws were not a pick-and-choose or cherry-picking choice for the platforms following the notification of the IT guidelines for social media.
He had issued a warning that the safe harbor protection that these platforms enjoy will disappear if and when the regulations are broken. The safe harbor protection offered by IT legislation protects online platforms, such as social media and e-commerce, from user-posted information.
The government views the internet through the lens of maintaining its security and holding 120 crore digital nagriks accountable (digital citizens). Internet security and trust are essential components of the trillion-dollar digital economy aim, According to the minister.
