Brahmin Leaders Oppose Inclusion of Sub-Castes in State Survey

The All-Karnataka Brahmin Mahasabha’s district unit has expressed strong opposition to the inclusion of sub-castes within the Brahmin community in the State Backward Classes Commission’s proposed social and educational survey. Office bearers submitted a petition to Deputy Commissioner Suresh B Itnal, urging the removal of Brahmin sub-castes from the survey list.

The petition highlighted concerns over entries such as Brahmin Christian (serial No. 209), Brahmin Mujawar Muslim (serial No. 883), and Vaishya Brahmin Christian (serial No. 1384). Leaders argued that the Brahmin community does not have sub-castes, and these classifications are misleading. They requested that any revisions or new lists be prepared only after consultation with community leaders and experts.

The leaders stressed that all 64 Brahmin sub-castes should be recognised uniformly as Hindu Brahmins. They also voiced concern over a perceived trend to portray Brahmins as weak or less numerous, asserting that the current government action may reinforce this notion.

Calling for accountability, the Mahasabha urged the authorities to correct the oversight and ensure that the survey accurately reflects the community’s structure. The leaders’ petition seeks to safeguard the identity and social representation of Brahmins in Karnataka, maintaining respect for their traditions and cultural heritage.
