The timely arrival of rain has come as a relief to red gram (tur), green gram and black gram crops, which were struggling due to the delayed monsoon. Crops sown in some parts of the taluk during the last week of May had initially grown well, but began to wither due to a prolonged dry spell.According to weather department data, Sedam received 40 mm of rainfall on July 29, while Adaki recorded 24.3 mm, Mudhol 42 mm, Kodla 36.8 mm and Kolkunda 30.4 mm.
On August 2, Sedam received 38.1 mm, Adaki 13.3 mm, Mudhol 38.01 mm, Kodla 61.1 mm and Kolkunda 36.3 mm of rain. On August 3, Sedam recorded 7 mm, Adaki 12.4 mm, Mudhol 48.2 mm, Kodla 7 mm and Kolkunda 8.06 mm.
The widespread rainfall has brought relief to farmers across most parts of the taluk.The sowing window for green gram and black gram during the monsoon has already ended, while farmers can still sow red gram. Some farmers have now begun sowing red gram, taking advantage of the recent rainfall. Farmers said that if the crop receives sufficient rainfall after sowing, it could provide a good yield. However, a lack of further rainfall could affect the yield.
Farmers also recalled that the earlier Pushya rainfall was considered crucial for the monsoon crops. They said that had it arrived in sufficient quantity, the crops would have grown much better.The Ashlesha rainfall period began on August 3. Farmers are hopeful that the rainfall during this period will be favourable and provide adequate moisture for the crops.
The recent rainfall has provided some relief to crops that were on the verge of withering. However, there is still a possibility of a reduction in yield, said Vishalakumar, Assistant Director of Agriculture.
