Mandya: Growers in crisis

MANDYA

The agricultural heartland of Mandya is confronting a severe climatic anomaly. During Tuesday’s extensive virtual interaction, local officials presented a grim reality to the state leadership: the district is grappling with a staggering 70% rainfall deficit for the crucial monsoon months of July and August.

The acute lack of rain has essentially stalled the sowing season, forcing the district administration to declare a localized monsoon failure. Responding to the crisis, the Chief Minister instructed the Agriculture Department and district administrators to establish a seamless coordination network to shield farmers from the brunt of the extreme weather.

The situation in Mandya is further complicated by interstate water-sharing obligations. The Cauvery Water Management Committee has recently mandated Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to neighboring Tamil Nadu over the next fortnight. Acknowledging the anxiety this has caused among local agriculturists, the Chief Minister assured that the state cabinet would review the water release mandate in a high-level meeting within the coming days, keeping the interests of Karnataka’s farmers at the absolute forefront.

In a strong rebuke of performative governance, the Chief Minister urged local leaders to abandon “publicity-driven programs” in favor of concrete fieldwork.

Directives for Mandya

  • Alternative cropping: Officials must immediately initiate aggressive awareness campaigns to transition farmers away from water-intensive crops like paddy and sugarcane, promoting drought-resistant alternatives.
  • Grassroots presence: Politicians and bureaucrats must operate directly from the taluk level to prevent farmers from having to travel long distances for grievance redressal.
  • Strategic Water Management: Every drop of available water must be mapped and prioritized for local agricultural survival before interstate allocations are finalized.
