Shivamogga’s Sahyadri campus to get Rs 12 crore science centre aimed at promoting practical learning and student research opportunities.
Shivamogga
A Category-2 Science Centre is being constructed at the Sahyadri College campus in Shivamogga at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore, providing students with opportunities for practical learning, research, and scientific exploration.
Shivamogga MP B.Y. Raghavendra visited the construction site and reviewed the progress of the project. Speaking to the media, he said five acres of valuable university land had been allocated for the science centre and thanked the university administration for supporting the initiative.
The centre will help students study biodiversity, scientific aspects of the Western Ghats, and other research areas. It will also provide opportunities for interested students to pursue scientific activities. The project is being funded jointly by the Central and State governments in a 50:50 ratio.
Raghavendra said the remaining 2.5 acres of land would be used for developing a modern planetarium in the future. He added that the existing planetarium at Ayanur would also be upgraded with state government assistance.
On irrigation issues, he said previous government initiatives had helped complete several lift irrigation projects, enabling water supply to lakes despite reduced rainfall. He also mentioned efforts to resolve electricity-related issues affecting water pumping operations.
Discussing the Agumbe tunnel road proposal, the MP said a meeting with technical experts would be held soon to examine its feasibility. He stressed that development should protect both nature and public livelihoods.
Quote
“The main objective of the centre is to provide students with hands-on experience through modern laboratories. Following his request to former Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Rs 10 crore was sanctioned for the building construction and Rs 2 crore for laboratory equipment. He added that another Rs 1 crore is required to complete the remaining works.”
