Ronaldo eyes missing FIFA World Cup trophy

HOUSTON

Cristiano Ronaldo will begin what could be his last FIFA World Cup campaign as Portugal face DR Congo in Houston, with the veteran forward still chasing the only major trophy missing from his career. He is making his sixth World Cup appearance at age 41, extending a record for experience in the tournament. A World Cup title remains the biggest gap in his legendary career, despite success at Euro 2016 and Nations League wins in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo has eight World Cup goals but has not scored in knockout matches, with his last World Cup goal coming in 2022 against Ghana. Portugal also include stars Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva as they look to start their campaign strongly against DR Congo. DR Congo are making only their second World Cup appearance, returning after 52 years since their first outing in 1974 as Zaire.

Portugal enter as UEFA Nations League champions, while DR Congo qualified through inter-confederation playoffs with a win over Jamaica. DR Congo attackers Cedric Bakambu and Yoane Wissa will be key threats, while Portugal rely on Ronaldo and their strong squad depth. The match in Houston marks the first-ever meeting between Portugal and DR Congo in international football history.

Ronaldo is also set to join Lionel Messi in playing six World Cups, highlighting his longevity as Portugal begin another bid for the elusive title in football’s biggest tournament, with fans worldwide watching closely as history and legacy expectations build around the veteran striker now.
