The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the membership of Cricket Canada over serious breaches of its membership obligations, while ensuring that Canadian national teams remain eligible to participate in international competitions.

The decision was announced following the ICC Board’s annual meeting in Ahmedabad and comes weeks after the governing body’s Anti-Corruption Unit launched an investigation into the administration of cricket in Canada.

Despite the suspension, the ICC clarified that Canada’s men’s and women’s national teams will continue to compete in ICC-sanctioned events. Funding required for the operation of national teams will also remain available through a controlled mechanism overseen by the ICC to ensure players are not adversely affected by governance issues within the national board.

The move follows growing scrutiny of Cricket Canada after a documentary broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in April alleged widespread corruption within the organisation. The report included claims of match manipulation, governance irregularities and threats of violence involving several players and officials.

Media reports indicated that the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit initiated an investigation shortly after the allegations surfaced.

In a statement, the ICC said its board had resolved to suspend Cricket Canada due to serious violations of membership requirements. However, it emphasised the importance of safeguarding the interests of Canadian cricketers and maintaining the development of the sport in the country.

To regain its membership status, Cricket Canada must meet a series of conditions designed to address governance and administrative shortcomings. The ICC said progress would be monitored by its Normalisation Committee, with support from ICC management.

Reinstatement will only be considered once the board is satisfied that all stipulated conditions have been fully met. The measures are intended to strengthen transparency, accountability and administrative standards within the organisation.

The suspension mirrors action taken by the ICC against USA Cricket in 2025 for similar breaches of membership rules. Although USA Cricket remains suspended, American national teams continue to participate in ICC competitions and are expected to feature at the cricket tournament during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The ICC’s latest action highlights its increasing focus on governance standards among member nations as cricket continues its global expansion.
