Argentina captain Lionel Messi is pushing himself through an intense training programme as he gears up for the FIFA World Cup 2026, according to his Inter Miami and national teammate Rodrigo de Paul. The veteran forward, who continues to perform at a high level in Major League Soccer, is reportedly going beyond his regular club commitments to maintain peak physical condition.

De Paul revealed that Messi has been following a structured double-session training plan for the past two to three months, designed specifically to prepare him for the demands of another World Cup campaign. The programme is being carried out alongside a personal trainer, with both players reportedly committing fully to the additional workload.

De Paul explained that the training arrangement was mutually agreed upon as part of Messi’s focused preparation strategy. He said the sessions go beyond what is required at club level, highlighting the Argentine skipper’s determination to stay at the highest competitive standard even in the later stages of his career.

“Between two and three months ago, we had a training plan beyond what we do at the club and we give it our all,” De Paul was quoted as saying, adding that both players are fully committed to the demanding schedule.

Despite being 38, Messi continues to deliver impressive performances for Inter Miami in the 2026 MLS season. He has already scored 12 goals in 12 matches and provided six assists, underlining his enduring influence on the pitch.

In his latest outing, Messi contributed a goal and an assist in Inter Miami’s 2-0 victory over Portland Timbers, further boosting their position in the league standings. The club currently sits second in the table with 28 points from 14 matches, just two points behind leaders Nashville.

With the World Cup approaching, Messi’s preparations appear firmly on track as he aims to guide Argentina in defending their title on football’s biggest stage. His disciplined training routine has once again highlighted the legendary forward’s relentless drive for excellence, even after achieving nearly every major honour in the sport.
