Water-Saving Drive
In a landmark initiative to promote water conservation, the Karnataka Congress government has introduced the large-scale installation of aerators in Bengaluru households and establishments, resulting in significant savings for the city’s water supply system.
According to official data, the installation of aerators has helped the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) save nearly 90 million liters per day (MLD) of water. This achievement is being described as the first-of-its-kind step by the state government to curb excessive water usage in the city.
Over the past 15 months, as many as 14,33,316 aerators have been installed across residences, offices, and commercial outlets. The device, which regulates water flow in taps and prevents wastage, has proven highly effective in optimizing usage without compromising convenience for consumers.
Officials noted that this measure has reduced the city’s overall water demand by nearly 30 percent, thereby easing pressure on BWSSB’s supply system. With demand brought under control, the availability of water has improved across several neighborhoods, resulting in a noticeable decline in complaints from consumers about irregular or inadequate supply.
The government emphasized that the aerator project demonstrates how simple technology-driven interventions can address critical urban challenges. Authorities further stated that they plan to expand the initiative, covering more households and public facilities in the coming months, while continuing awareness campaigns to encourage responsible water usage. With this effort, Bengaluru is being positioned as a model city for sustainable water management in India.
