District disaster meeting reviews heavy rainfall risks

District officials in Kodagu have started preparations ahead of the monsoon season after warnings of possible heavy rainfall in June. Deputy Commissioner S. J. Somashekhar chaired a District Disaster Management Authority meeting on Tuesday and directed officers to stay alert and complete safety arrangements in advance.

Officials said rainfall in the district has remained below normal since January. However weather experts have warned that sudden and intense rain may hit the region during the coming weeks. Authorities have already identified flood-prone and landslide-sensitive areas across the district.

The Deputy Commissioner instructed nodal officers tahsildars engineers police officials and local bodies to work together during emergencies. He also asked taluk-level teams to hold meetings under the leadership of local MLAs and spread awareness among residents living in risky areas.

A report on the condition of schools colleges and government buildings has also been ordered. District authorities said helpline centres will function round the clock during the rainy season with staff working in three shifts. Care centres with drinking water electricity and toilet facilities are also being prepared for people who may need evacuation.

Officials from departments including police forest health electricity and public works attended the meeting and discussed precautionary measures. Superintendent of Police Bindumani said special teams have already been formed and emergency equipment like life jackets torches and gumboots will be kept ready.

Health officials were instructed to stock medicines and take steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases during the rains. Authorities also warned people not to spread false information through social media and said only official updates should be trusted.

District officials said protecting human life livestock and public property remains their highest priority as Kodagu prepares for the approaching monsoon season.

Officials also said roadside trees damaged electric poles and blocked drains will be cleared before heavy rain begins. Volunteers from NCC NSS Red Cross groups and former servicemen may assist rescue operations if emergencies arise. Authorities requested residents living near rivers and hillsides to remain cautious and immediately report signs of flooding landslides or damaged roads to local officials.
