Visakhapatnam is rapidly emerging as a global IT hub, attracting major tech giants and retaining local talent through infrastructure.
VISAKHAPATNAM
The coastal city of Visakhapatnam is rapidly shedding its image as a quiet port town, emerging instead as India’s newest IT growth hub. State officials announced that a unique “talent-first” ecosystem is successfully drawing global tech giants to the region, effectively reversing the long-standing trend of local professionals migrating to other cities for work.
The state’s push is backed by progressive policies like the Land Incentive for Tech Hubs (LIFT), which focuses on industry-academia collaboration. The most significant validation of this strategy is the massive expansion of Infosys. The tech giant, which started with just 250 employees in early 2024, has surged to nearly 1,900 staff members. To sustain this momentum, the government has allotted 20 acres of land to the company for a permanent campus capable of housing 7,000 professionals.
IT Minister Nara Lokesh emphasized that the city’s strength lies in its “industry-ready” youth. He noted that while local talent has historically powered tech firms worldwide, those same experts are now choosing to build their careers at home. Over 1,000 fresh graduates have already been recruited from the region, proving that the local education system is successfully aligning with global standards.
By combining robust infrastructure with worker-friendly urban mobility, Visakhapatnam is positioning itself as a serious competitor to established tech centers. With major investments flowing in and a maturing ecosystem, the city is no longer just a source of talent, it is becoming a premier destination for global innovation.
