The advisory comes in response to forecasts of a severe heatwave in the coming weeks. According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to climb significantly this season, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. In light of this, the Karnataka government has urged the public to take precautionary measures and follow simple guidelines to stay safe.
One of the key recommendations is to avoid stepping out during peak heat hours, especially between 12 pm and 3 pm, when the sun’s intensity is at its highest. People are advised to remain indoors during this period unless absolutely necessary.
Staying hydrated is another crucial aspect emphasized in the advisory. Citizens are encouraged to drink water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty, and to carry water bottles while traveling. Wearing light, loose-fitting cotton clothing is also recommended to help regulate body temperature. Additionally, the use of umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses can provide protection from direct sunlight.
The department has also highlighted the importance of a healthy diet during the summer. Consuming refreshing drinks such as tender coconut water, fruit juices, buttermilk, and Oral Rehydration Solution can help maintain hydration levels. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens should be included in daily meals to support overall health.
At the same time, people are advised to limit the intake of beverages like coffee, tea, alcohol, and sugary soft drinks, as these can contribute to dehydration. Reducing strenuous physical activities during hot weather is also essential to prevent fatigue and heat exhaustion.
To maintain a cool indoor environment, residents are encouraged to keep windows open for proper ventilation and use curtains to block direct sunlight. Special care should be taken for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly. The advisory also warns against leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles, as temperatures inside can rise rapidly.
Lastly, individuals are urged to monitor their health closely. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or muscle cramps should not be ignored. Immediate rest and medical consultation are recommended if such signs appear.
The department concluded its advisory with a strong message urging citizens to remain cautious and prioritize their health during the ongoing heatwave.
