Belagavi Regional Commissioner Janaki K M has directed officials to ensure that water released into canal networks is used strictly for drinking purposes and not diverted for any other use.
Chairing a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, she said that while there is currently no acute shortage of drinking water for people and livestock, the district administration must be prepared with alternative water sources in vulnerable taluks during the summer. Taking note of farmers’ demands to fill lakes, she said that based on a technical report submitted by officials of Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited, a total of 2.30 TMC of water will be released from the Almatti reservoir between April 10 and April 30 through canal networks to water bodies across the district.
She emphasized that strict monitoring must be ensured by district and taluk-level officials to prevent misuse of this water for non-drinking purposes.
Speed Up Jaladhare Project
The Commissioner also instructed officials to expedite the ambitious Jaladhare project, which aims to provide a permanent solution to drinking water issues in the district. She directed authorities to resolve technical and other pending issues and complete the project on a priority basis.
Support for Bhoosuraksha Scheme
Highlighting the importance of the government’s Bhoosuraksha scheme, she urged officials to actively participate in digitizing land records to ensure their safety and easy accessibility for citizens.
“All old land records should be digitized at the earliest so that farmers can access them quickly,” she said, adding that awareness must be created among the public at district, taluk, hobli, and village levels about accessing land records online instead of visiting offices. Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. Audram, Vijayapura Sub-Divisional Officer Gurnath Dadde, Indi Sub-Divisional Officer Chidanand Guruswamy, along with tahsildars of all taluks and officials of the Almatti dam circle, were present at the meeting.
