IndiGo updates fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights due to rising jet fuel costs after partial government price hikes, leading to moderate airfare increases
Hyderabad:
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Wednesday that it will implement revised fuel charges ranging from Rs 275 to Rs 10,000 on domestic and international flights starting April 2, citing the surge in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
The revision comes after the government partially increased ATF prices by 25% for domestic flights. Since March 14, IndiGo has already levied fuel charges of Rs 425 to Rs 2,300 on tickets amid escalating fuel costs due to the West Asia conflict.
For domestic routes, fuel charges will now vary by distance, ranging from Rs 275 to Rs 950, while international flights will see surcharges between Rs 900 and Rs 10,000, depending on distance. The airline stated that ATF prices for international operations more than doubled in the last month, significantly impacting operating costs.
IndiGo emphasized that while fully passing on the fuel price hike would require larger fare adjustments, the airline has implemented relatively smaller increases to limit the burden on passengers.
The new fuel charges will take effect from 0001 hours, aiming to balance operational sustainability with passenger affordability. With global fuel prices remaining volatile, the airline may continue to recalibrate charges in line with market conditions.
