Digital thieves target hospitals, local factories

Blurb: A new report reveals India’s healthcare, schools, and factories face massive cyberattacks, urging real-time monitoring, stronger security, and staff training to protect critical data and public trust.

NEW DELHI
A chilling new report reveals that India’s healthcare, schools, and factories are now the primary targets for cybercriminals. Between late 2024 and late 2025, these three sectors faced nearly half of all digital attacks in the country, according to security experts at Seqrite.
Hospitals were hit the hardest, facing over 3.7 million individual threats. Unlike a stolen credit card, a patient’s medical history or diagnostic report cannot simply be “reset.”

This makes healthcare data incredibly valuable for hackers looking to blackmail victims or commit long-term identity fraud. Experts warn that these breaches do more than just steal data; they can delay life-saving surgeries, mess with lab results, and ruin years of expensive medical research.
The report found that most attackers used “Trojans”—hidden malicious software—to sneak into systems. While some hackers wanted quick cash through ransomware, others seemed interested in “espionage,” specifically targeting pharmaceutical trials and secret research. Most of these digital break-ins happened through simple mistakes, like clicking on phishing emails, using pirated software, or leaving remote login services unprotected.
Because hospitals and factories run 24/7, they are “data-rich” targets that cannot afford to shut down. Security professionals are now urging organizations to move beyond basic passwords. They recommend real-time monitoring and better staff training to spot scams before they land. Ultimately, protecting this information isn’t just about fixing computers; it is about saving lives and keeping the public’s trust in our most vital institutions.
