Mysuru Member of Parliament Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar has urged the Central government to include Mysuru in the proposed Urban Economic Zone scheme to speed up the city’s development.
The MP submitted a memorandum to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during a meeting in New Delhi. He requested that Mysuru be considered under the scheme announced in the recent Union Budget.
According to him, the scheme aims to improve modern infrastructure in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities with a population of more than five lakh and in major pilgrimage centres. He said Mysuru, widely known as the cultural capital of Karnataka, has a rich heritage and global recognition. Including the city in the scheme would further strengthen its development and attract new opportunities.
The MP explained that Mysuru already has strong tourism, heritage, and environmental value. Therefore, any future development projects should be planned carefully so that the city’s culture and natural beauty are protected.
He said that once Mysuru is included in the scheme, experts, public representatives, and citizens will be consulted to prepare a comprehensive development plan. Suggestions from different sectors will be collected to design projects that benefit the people and support sustainable growth.
Mr. Wadiyar also noted that the Finance Minister assured him that appropriate action would be taken after reviewing the request.
The Urban Economic Zone scheme has been designed by the Central government to promote rapid urban development. Cities like Bengaluru, Surat, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack, Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur are already part of the initiative.
Each zone is expected to receive nearly ₹5,000 crore every year for infrastructure development through a Public-Private Partnership model.
