Legally binding commitments on professional services under free trade agreements (FTAs) are set to open global markets for Indian professionals, officials said on Wednesday. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal highlighted the need for better coordination among stakeholders, domestic reforms, and adoption of global best practices to strengthen India’s professional services sector.
Addressing the ‘Chintan Shivir on Professional Services,’ Agrawal said services trade significantly contributes to India’s economy alongside merchandise exports. He emphasised that India’s demographic advantage offers huge potential to meet growing international demand, provided professionals are trained with upgraded skills and technology knowledge. Greater openness in trade, he added, will enhance the country’s economic competitiveness.
The Chintan Shivir offered professional bodies a platform to exchange ideas on global best practices and align domestic regulations with emerging trends, including artificial intelligence and technological developments. The ICAI playbook was praised for its market-oriented framework, international directorate, and AI-focused certification courses. The Indian Nursing Council’s efforts to improve access for Indian nurses in global markets were also acknowledged.
Discussions included Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs), focusing on challenges, better utilisation, and their role in expanding digitally delivered services. Participants also explored how FTAs can support digital delivery of professional services, professional mobility, and alignment of domestic qualification rules with international standards. Agrawal encouraged professional bodies to actively participate in global forums for knowledge sharing and collaborations. With reforms, skill upgrades, and strategic international agreements, India aims to strengthen its position as a global hub for professional services and unlock greater export opportunities across sectors.
