Tamil Nadu aims to install 20,000 public EV charging stations by 2031 to accelerate green mobility, ease range anxiety, and attract private infrastructure investments.
CHENNAI
In a massive push toward clean and green transportation, the Tamil Nadu government has announced an ambitious plan to set up 20,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state by 2031. This strategic roadmap aims to make green mobility highly accessible, build a robust support network, and attract significant private investments to the state’s rapidly growing EV industry.
The detailed plan was finalized during high-level meetings held in Chennai over the last two days. Top government officials and green energy experts reviewed the state’s current charging facilities and discussed practical solutions to expand the network. The first evaluation meeting was led by Chief Secretary Sai Kumar to map out the current hurdles and plan smooth, widespread coverage across both cities and villages.
Following this, a technical session was organized by the Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL). Joined by representatives from the ITDP India and the Mentor Tamil Nadu initiatives, the team focused on building smart, policy-backed strategies to quickly roll out these public stations.
By committing to 20,000 public stations, the government aims to erase “range anxiety” and build strong consumer confidence to switch from petrol or diesel to electric vehicles. Officials highlighted that a well-connected charging network is key to encouraging people to adopt electric cars, two-wheelers, and commercial buses.
Importantly, the government is looking to share the financial load by offering highly supportive policies that invite private businesses to build and operate these charging stations. This collaborative approach will speed up the infrastructure development without draining public funds. Ultimately, this green initiative will significantly lower vehicular emissions, clean up urban air, and position Tamil Nadu as a top-tier national leader in eco-friendly transport.
