The Madras High Court has issued an interim injunction against the recently released film Aaramoley, blocking its use of scenes and background music from the 2010 hit Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV). The court criticised the unauthorized inclusion of content from the original film, calling it a clear case of copyright infringement. The ruling prevents any VTV footage or music from appearing in Aaramoley until the primary hearing concludes.
The petition, filed by T. Rajeev on behalf of RS Infotainment, claimed that Aaramoley used visuals and music from Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa without permission from the production houses RS Infotainment and Escape Artists. During the hearing, Justice N. Senthilkumar agreed that immediate intervention was necessary and highlighted the responsibility of filmmakers to respect copyright laws. Lawyers for RS Infotainment stressed that any use of their material without authorization violates the law, prompting the court to issue the injunction.
Directed by debutant Sarang Thiyagu, Aaramoley, released on November 7, features Kishen Das, Harshad Khan, Sivathmika, and Megha Akash. Music for the film is composed by Sidhu Kumar. The movie, described as a feel-good mix of romance and friendship, had initially received positive audience response. However, social media attention to the unauthorized VTV content led the production company to take legal action.
Sarang Thiyagu, a former assistant to director Gautham Menon on Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, has drawn extra scrutiny due to his involvement. Following the injunction, edits and changes have been made to the film’s screening, streaming, and distribution. The ruling is expected to set an important precedent in copyright law, reminding filmmakers of the need to obtain proper permissions before using existing content.
