Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Girish Chandra Murmu on Saturday called on CAG officers to “think out of the box” and adapt to the rapidly changing technological landscape. Speaking at the 4th Audit Diwas celebrations, Murmu emphasized the need for innovation in auditing and accounting practices to keep up with the increasing use of AI and emerging technologies in governance.

Murmu acknowledged the growing risks associated with technological advancements, including privacy breaches, algorithmic biases, and social exclusion. He stated that the CAG is closely monitoring these developments and integrating new technologies to enhance auditing effectiveness. “We must experiment with new techniques to nurture creativity, improve operational efficiency, and deliver better results,” he said.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who inaugurated the event, praised the CAG’s legacy and its proactive adoption of AI, which has strengthened audit processes and increased transparency. Birla also highlighted the importance of parliamentary committees in scrutinizing audit reports and ensuring financial accountability.

Murmu further spoke about the CAG’s focus on audits that address social issues affecting people’s lives and livelihoods. He also mentioned the milestone of the CAG assuming the chairmanship of the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) for the 2024-2027 term.

Audit Diwas, which marks the appointment of India’s first Auditor General in 1860, commemorated 164 years of the CAG’s contribution to financial oversight and good governance.
