India is expected to add 33.9 million new jobs to its workforce by 2028, reaching a total of 457.62 million workers, according to a report on Wednesday. This job growth is driven by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on key sectors of the economy.
The emerging AI-driven transformation is expected to significantly alter the job landscape across India’s growth sectors. The retail sector will see the most significant increase, requiring 6.96 million additional workers to support its expansion. Manufacturing follows with 1.5 million new jobs, while education and healthcare sectors will need 0.84 million and 0.8 million new employees, respectively.
AI is also projected to create 2.73 million new technology-related jobs. In particular, software application developers will see a rise in demand, with an expected increase of 109,700 positions. Other high-demand roles include systems software developers (48,800 new jobs), data engineers (48,500), and web developers (48,500).
Roles such as data analysts, software testers, database architects, and computer systems managers are also expected to grow substantially. AI technologies are anticipated to automate or augment significant portions of tasks for many tech professionals, particularly systems administrators and AI systems engineers.
The research, commissioned by ServiceNow and conducted by Pearson, emphasizes that AI will not only create high-value job opportunities but also help build enduring digital careers for India’s workforce.
