Baku
India will not be attending the two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit (WLCAS) starting Tuesday in Baku, Azerbaijan, where heads of state will present their country statements. The summit, focused on climate finance for vulnerable nations, is part of the 2024 UN climate conference (COP29).
The summit in Baku will feature 82 leaders, including prominent figures like Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer. They will discuss global climate issues, including climate finance and emissions reduction. While India is absent from this initial segment, it will participate in the second part of the high-level segment on November 19-20, with Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, leading the country’s delegation.
India’s approach at COP29 will focus on securing a new climate finance target through the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), aiming to replace the expired $100 billion annual commitment made by developed countries in 2009. The country has played a key role in shaping global climate finance frameworks, especially for mitigation and adaptation efforts.
COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev and UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell have stressed the importance of global cooperation in accelerating clean energy and addressing climate challenges. The event also highlighted five key energy goals for the coming years, including scaling up renewable energy and improving energy efficiency globally.
