WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has issued a stark warning, stating that northern Gaza is on the brink of famine if immediate humanitarian aid is not delivered. Expressing grave concern on social media on Friday night, Dr. Tedros emphasized that the situation in Gaza is worsening rapidly, with famine now a likely outcome unless urgent action is taken.
The World Health Organization shared findings from a report published by the Famine Review Committee (FRC) on November 8, which outlined the dire conditions in the region. According to the report, aid shipments into Gaza have drastically decreased, with only 58 trucks entering the area per day—down from the peak levels of previous months. The sharp rise in prices for basic goods, such as cooking fuel, alongside the collapse of local livelihoods, has further worsened the crisis.
The report also warned that starvation, malnutrition, and disease are spreading rapidly, particularly in northern Gaza, where famine conditions may already have been reached. The WHO is calling for a coordinated global response to deliver food, medicine, and essential supplies to the region. Dr. Tedros urged that safe and swift access for aid is critical to prevent the crisis from escalating further.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza, humanitarian conditions have deteriorated sharply, leaving millions at risk. The WHO continues to call for increased international support to mitigate the effects of this growing crisis.
