David Warner has been appointed captain of the Sydney Thunder on Wednesday, for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. Warner, who previously led Thunder in 2011, takes over from Chris Green, who will continue as a player. Warner’s leadership ban was lifted by an independent review panel last month, paving the way for his return as skipper.

Warner, a founding member of the Thunder team, expressed enthusiasm about his role and emphasized the importance of guiding younger players. “Captaining the Thunder again is meaningful. I was there from the beginning, and having the captaincy again feels fantastic. I’m ready to lead by example and help nurture the upcoming talent,” Warner shared in a statement.

Highlighting the team’s camaraderie, Warner stressed the value of off-field leadership. “Building connections is vital. Whether it’s team meals, golf, or engaging with fans, it’s about keeping the team grounded and united,” he added.

Warner praised former captains, particularly Chris Green and Jason Sangha, for their influence. “Greeny led with dedication, and Sangha, before his injury, was also a strong leader. I’ve learned a lot from them, and I know they’ll be essential support this season.”

Sydney Thunder’s general manager, Trent Copeland, described Warner’s appointment as pivotal for the club’s future. “Appointing Warner isn’t just about victories; it’s about fostering a culture that supports young players’ growth,” he said. With Warner and Sam Billings joining for the entire season, Thunder is set to build a team focused on both mentorship and competitive success.

Sydney Thunder will open their BBL season on Dec 17 against the Adelaide Strikers in Canberra.
