Spain’s expertise in clean energy can be instrumental in helping India reach its target of 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, said Spanish President Pedro Sanchez at the ‘CII Spain India Business Summit’ in Mumbai. Sanchez emphasized Spain’s leadership in clean energy and expressed confidence that a stronger partnership with India could significantly advance India’s green transition.

With Spain investing $4.2 billion in India over the past two decades, Sanchez highlighted Spain’s potential to further contribute through collaborative infrastructure projects, particularly in transport and rail systems. On Monday, the two nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in rail transport, aiming to improve India’s high-speed rail and conventional railways.

Sanchez also underscored the importance of a European Union-India free trade agreement to support growth in both regions. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari echoed similar sentiments, noting India’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2070. Gadkari pointed to Spain’s technologies in green energy, such as wind and solar power, which could bolster India’s sustainable energy efforts.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of CII, expressed optimism about future collaborations with Spain, especially in urban infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and green technology. Spain’s innovations, he said, could play a pivotal role in India’s infrastructure expansion and energy transformation.
