National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), one of the largest securities depositories globally, announced on Friday, that it has reached a remarkable milestone of ₹500 lakh crore (approximately US $6 trillion) in assets under custody. This achievement highlights the rapid growth of NSDL’s asset base, demonstrating a significant acceleration in asset accumulation.
Historically, NSDL’s growth trajectory shows impressive strides: it took 18 years to reach ₹100 lakh crore in June 2014, followed by a six-year interval to hit ₹200 lakh crore in November 2020. Remarkably, it has only taken four additional years to achieve the latest milestone.
S. Gopalan, Interim Managing Director of NSDL, expressed pride in this accomplishment, stating, “We are very happy and proud to have reached this significant milestone of reaching US $6 trillion in value of assets held in custody. On this momentous occasion, we extend our gratitude to regulators, investors, market participants, and other stakeholders.”
NSDL maintains a commanding 86% market share in the value of demat assets, with accounts accessible in over 99.3% of India’s pin codes. The organization operates more than 63,000 service centers across the country, facilitating secure holding and transfer of dematerialized securities, which is crucial for modernizing India’s securities market.
In addition to its core services, NSDL offers various innovations, including the NSDL SPEEDe App, Digital LAS, FPI monitoring, and technology linkages, enhancing the overall efficiency of the financial ecosystem.
