French authorities have banned PSV Eindhoven supporters from attending the UEFA Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on October 22, according to the Dutch club’s announcement on Tuesday. This decision follows previous incidents involving PSV fans, prompting a complete travel ban for them to Paris.
As a result, PSV has informed the 2,000 fans who purchased tickets for the match that they will receive full refunds. The club expressed surprise at the French authorities’ decision, stating, ‘Despite not having any outstanding penalties, the French police have cited past disturbances, especially during last year’s match against RC Lens. There are also some domestic security concerns.’
PSV regrets the timing of the ban, as they had already made extensive preparations and incurred significant costs. Last October, during a Champions League match against Lens that ended in a 1-1 draw, PSV fans caused chaos by throwing chairs and other items toward the Lens supporters. This led to a retaliation from the Lens fans, who began throwing objects back.
Additionally, during a Europa League match against Arsenal last year, PSV fans caused damage to the stadium and hurled objects at Arsenal supporters. Following these incidents, UEFA imposed penalties, including a travel ban for PSV fans for their next away game.
