A Ministerial Declaration on Adolescent-Responsive Health Systems was adopted by Member States of the World Health Organisation South-East Asia region on Tuesday. This Declaration commits to policies, resources, and services designed for the unique needs of adolescents. The aim is to create a healthier future for all.

The Declaration highlights the need for adolescents to access high-quality health services without financial barriers. It was signed by health ministers and WHO leaders during the 77th Regional Committee Session. The focus is on strengthening primary health care and achieving universal health coverage.

Member States agreed to improve national and local financial resources for adolescent health programs. Effective interventions will include school health programs and mental health support. Community participation in raising awareness about adolescent health was emphasized.

A commitment was made to include adolescent health indicators in health management systems. Data collection and analysis will guide policy improvements.

Adolescence, from ages 10 to 19, is a critical time for development. In the South-East Asia region, there are nearly 360 million adolescents, making up 27 percent of the global adolescent population. Mental health issues and non-communicable diseases are rising among adolescents. Additionally, adolescent girls face significant health challenges, including malnutrition and high birth rates.

Investments in adolescent health were recognized as providing substantial returns for future generations.
