Agitation for Yadgir-Almatti railway line intensifies

Yadgir

The Yadgir-Almatti railway line construction, which began in 1924 but was halted, has sparked renewed protests in eight taluks of Vijayapura and Yadgir districts. Agitation committees have been formed in three taluks, and discussions are ongoing in five other taluks to demand the completion of the project.

Currently, the railway distance between Almatti and Yadgir is 328 km, with 47 stations, including Vijayapura, Hotgi, Kalaburagi, and Wadi. If the new line is built, the distance will be reduced to 162 km. The new line will connect Nidagundi, Basavana Bagewadi, Muddebihal, Talikoti, Hunasagi, Shorapur, Shahapur, Vadagera, and Yadgir taluks.

Agitation for the railway line has been active for 40 years, intensifying since 1997. Meetings with railway ministers have been held over the past 27 years. The construction work was started in five phases by a private company, which sold its shares at one rupee each. Work was stopped due to the intensifying freedom struggle.

Activists from Muddebihal and Talikoti have fought for decades for the railway line, and Hunasagi taluk has also joined the effort. Surveys were conducted three times. If the line is completed, it will connect major ports in Goa and Vishakhapatnam. Committees are being formed in all taluks and villages along the proposed route to support the project.
