In response to forecasts of above-normal rainfall from the northeast monsoon, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has taken proactive measures by purchasing 36 boats. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicts heavy rain across various parts of Tamil Nadu, with the monsoon expected to arrive by the end of October.

To ensure effective management during this period, the Tamil Nadu government has assigned 15 IAS officers to oversee monsoon preparedness across Chennai’s zones. These officers will focus on planning, relief efforts, and mitigation strategies.

The GCC is actively identifying vulnerable areas, conducting mapping and analyses, and preparing institutional arrangements for a quick response. They are also working on capacity building, traffic management plans, and medical preparedness. Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran emphasized the need for community volunteers to support flood mitigation efforts.

Last December, Chennai experienced severe flooding due to Cyclone Michaung, resulting in nearly 400 mm of rainfall in just two days. This led to widespread waterlogging and raised concerns about the city’s disaster preparedness. Many residents criticized the relief operations, stating that there was insufficient warning and supplies ran low during the crisis. A retired banker, K. M. Natarajan, highlighted the need for better communication to allow residents to stock up on essentials ahead of time.
