Clearing the legacy waste from dump yards in twin cities has commenced and is expected to be completed by 2025. Over three decades, the waste had accumulated in two Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) dump yards. With the help of heavy machinery, the separation of garbage has started. Surrounding residents were facing hardship. Smoke and stench emanating from both units were adversely affecting the health of the residents in the surrounding area.
Following numerous protests, the HDMC cleared the dump yard.

A Gujarat-based company has been awarded Rs 30 crore tender to clear the legacy waste. The survey work has already been done. This initiative is expected to resolve various issues faced by residents. Residents of Vishal Nagar, Dharwad Colony, Near Anchatageri, and up to Bankapur Chowk have faced problems from the smoke of legacy waste.
Executive Engineer of HDMC’s Solid Waste Management division, BM Mallikarjunan told that the legacy waste has grown up to resemble hills. Step by step, the waste will be separated by various methods. Firstly, the waste accumulated into huge mounds will be loosened. A bio-cultural process will be done, and that waste will be brought to the machine and later separated. Every day, 1,000 tonnes of garbage is sifted and separated into materials like soil, plastic, glass, and iron. The soil will be used for construction, he added.
He said that the yard will be cleared by 2025 to complete the garbage management process.  We have to report to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) once in every six months regarding the progress, he said.
