The health department in Dakshina Kannada has advised the public against consuming uncooked food and has recommended drinking only boiled water after a cholera case was reported in the Nellikaru Primary Health Centre area of Moodbidri. The District Health Officer (DHO) confirmed that the infected person has recovered. This individual had eaten at a hotel in Hosmar, Karkala.
Cholera cases have also been reported in Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts. A circular has been sent to all Primary Health Centres in Dakshina Kannada, instructing them to report any cases with cholera symptoms. Meetings have been held with restaurant owners, warning them against serving stale food. Restaurants have been directed to provide only boiled water to customers.
People are advised to keep their surroundings clean and wash their hands with soap before eating. Vegetables and fruits should be thoroughly cleaned before use. Restaurants are also instructed to wash dishes, including glasses and plates, with hot water. The public is urged to avoid eating food from roadside vendors.
The DHO noted that cholera can cause diarrhea and dehydration and spreads through food contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Additionally, six beds have been reserved for suspected monkeypox cases at Government Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru. Surveillance has been implemented at Mangaluru International Airport and New Mangalore Port since August 14, screening passengers arriving from South Africa for Mpox symptoms.
