Officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have reiterated their dedication to promoting sustainable urban growth. Speaking at the ASEAN Capitals and ASEAN Mayors Forum, Vientiane Mayor Ardsaphangthong Siphandone highlighted the commitment to foster innovation and mobilize resources in alignment with the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the New Urban Agenda.
A significant outcome of the forum was the adoption of the Vientiane Declaration, which outlines a collective approach to addressing urban development challenges. According to sources, the declaration emphasizes enhancing regional connectivity through improved transport networks and digital infrastructure to drive economic growth and strengthen cooperation between ASEAN cities.
The declaration also stresses the importance of building climate resilience. With urbanization and climate change posing increasing risks, officials agreed to prioritize sustainable urban planning and environmental protection.
Furthermore, the forum highlighted the need to empower local communities, particularly vulnerable groups, by improving access to education, healthcare, and essential services. Embracing digital transformation, smart city technologies, and green innovations were also identified as key drivers of sustainable urban solutions.
Lastly, the officials underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage, promoting cultural exchanges, and safeguarding ASEAN’s diverse traditions.
