The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a historic change for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. For the first time, the prize money for the women’s tournament will match that of the men’s event. The winners will earn USD 2.34 million, a substantial increase from the USD 1 million awarded in 2023. This change reflects a 134% boost in prize money.
Additionally, the losing semi-finalists will receive USD 675,000 each, compared to USD 210,000 last year. The total prize fund will be USD 7.96 million, marking a remarkable 225% increase from the previous year’s USD 2.45 million.
This decision, made during the ICC Annual Conference in July 2023, accelerates the ICC’s goal of achieving prize money equity by 2030. Cricket now becomes the first major team sport to offer equal prize money for both men’s and women’s World Cup events.
The men’s T20 World Cup prize money is higher due to the larger number of teams and matches. Each win in the group stage will bring in USD 31,154, while teams not reaching the semi-finals will share USD 1.35 million based on their final positions.
The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will kick off on October 3 in Sharjah, with ten teams competing in 23 matches to determine the champion.
