A new Border Force Commander has been appointed in the UK to address illegal migration across the English Channel. Martin Hewitt, with over 30 years of experience in serious crime, was chosen for the role. He will oversee efforts to disrupt smuggling gangs and improve border security.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the appointment as he prepared for a visit to Rome to discuss migration strategies with Italian officials. This visit aims to learn from Italy’s successful approach, including a program that sends illegal migrants to Albania while their claims are processed.

The appointment follows a recent incident where eight people died when a boat carrying migrants capsized in the Channel. Starmer stated that the government is committed to tackling smuggling gangs that exploit vulnerable individuals.

Hewitt, formerly Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, will lead the Border Security Command with new powers. He will work with law enforcement and intelligence agencies to target organized immigration crime. The goal is to dismantle smuggling networks and protect UK borders.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted ongoing efforts to combat smuggling, including increasing British officers at Europol and recruiting specialist investigators. The new Border Security Command aims to enhance European cooperation and address dangerous boat crossings.

During the visit, Starmer and Hewitt will also tour Italy’s National Coordination Centre for Migration to explore successful practices and discuss future cooperation.
