The Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) has asked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur to issue an apology for comments made against journalists during a public meeting in Tarnol. The remarks, made on September 8, were termed ‘inappropriate’ by PCP Chairman Arshad Jadoon, particularly focusing on their offensive nature towards female journalists.
The PCP stated that the language used by CM Gandapur was unprofessional and disrespectful, diminishing the dignity of his office. It was noted that as the chief executive of the province, CM Gandapur is expected to maintain proper decorum and set a positive example for the citizens.
The PCP referred to Section 8 of the PCP Ordinance, which mandates the council to protect press freedom and address complaints from journalists. The council has urged CM Gandapur to avoid the use of ‘vulgar and irresponsible language,’ especially towards women journalists.
The CM has been given 15 days to deliver a formal apology. If this request is not fulfilled within the time frame, further action may be taken by the council. The PCP’s action underscores concerns about the treatment of journalists and the need for respect and professionalism in public communication. The focus remains on maintaining proper conduct in interactions with the media.
