Mustaq, 32, and Zakir, 36, were convicted by the Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court for attempting to murder police personnel. The conviction followed an incident that took place on December 17, 2015, near the gate of Sayyed Madani Darga, Ullal. Two other accused, Yasin and Ashraf Samosa, remain absconding.
The incident occurred when Head Constable Umesh and Police Constable Ravindra, responding to a tip-off about a disturbance, arrived at the scene in a PCR vehicle. The accused were reportedly throwing bottles and creating a nuisance. When questioned, they verbally abused the officers and threatened to kill them. Mustaq attempted to stab Constable Ravindra, but Head Constable Umesh intervened. Mustaq and others then grabbed Ravindra, twisted his arm, and assaulted him with a knife. Both officers were attacked, preventing them from performing their duties.
A case was registered against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 504, 506, 353, 332, and 307, read with section 34. The chargesheet was filed by the Ullal police.
Judge SV Kantharaju sentenced Mustaq and Zakir to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under IPC Section 307, with a fine of Rs 5,000. They also received additional sentences for other IPC sections, including two years for Section 504, seven years for Section 506, two years for Section 353, and two years for Section 332, each accompanied by fines. The court examined 13 witnesses, 21 documents, and three material objects during the trial.
