AC failure disrupts surgeries at BMCRI super specialty hospital

Must read

A major failure in the centralized air-conditioning (AC) system at Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) Super Specialty Hospital has disrupted surgical operations. The malfunction, caused by a voltage fluctuation, damaged the AC equipment, forcing the hospital to postpone all elective surgeries while continuing only emergency procedures.

BMCRI’s Super Specialty Hospital, equipped with six operating theaters and over 200 beds, typically conducts 30–40 surgeries daily. The facility, established under the Prime Minister’s Health Security Scheme in 2006, provides affordable advanced medical care. The AC breakdown has created significant challenges, especially in maintaining the controlled environment required for surgeries.

Challenges in surgery without AC

Operating rooms require temperatures between 24°C to 28°C to prevent bacterial growth and ensure patient safety. Without air conditioning, temperatures may exceed 37°C, increasing the risk of infections. Surgeons are relying on fans and coolers, but long and complex procedures have become difficult. Medical experts emphasize that this situation could lead to severe complications for patients if not resolved quickly.

Hospital’s actions

On November 25, the hospital issued a notice advising all departments to prioritize emergency surgeries and reschedule elective procedures. This has caused concern among patients awaiting operations. BMCRI staff are working to repair the AC system urgently to restore normal operations.

The incident highlights the critical role of temperature control in ensuring hygiene and patient safety in healthcare facilities. Hospital authorities aim to resolve the issue promptly to minimize disruptions and risks to patients.
